Social Emotional Learning

Post

Social and emotional learning (SEL) enhances students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges.  Throughout Country Day’s 14 grades, we are committed to helping children develop core SEL competencies.

SEL competencies include:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision-Making

Some examples include:

  • In our Lower School, an Emotional Support Counselor is available to help with individual, peer, or family challenges. Students are explicitly taught tools to support self-regulation and stress management and to peacefully resolve conflicts. Responsive Classroom techniques promote a respectful and healthy community of learners at school.
  • In our Middle School, SEL classes are integrated into the physical education program in order to address the health and wellness of the whole child.
  • In our High School, students engage in a program thoughtfully designed to prepare students for success in college, career and life.
