8th - 12th grade

Middle School Parents and Students

  • Information sessions with the College Counselors at the High School Preview in the fall.
  • “What Middle School Parents Need to Know about College Counseling,” informational session with the College Counselors at Open House in the spring.

Eighth Grade Students and New Ninth Grade Students

  • “Projected Pathway to College” individual counseling meeting with the College Counselors to chart future high school schedule options.

Ninth Grade Parents

  • “New Parent Orientation” in the fall includes a preview to college counseling.
  • “Understanding the College Counseling Process at SCDS” at Back-to-School Night in the fall.
  • Spring meeting for parents, “Coffee with the College Counselors.”

Tenth Grade Parents

  • “Understanding the College Counseling Process at SCDS” in the fall at Back-to-School Night.
  • Spring meeting for parents, “Coffee with the College Counselors.”

Tenth Grade Students

  • Individual student meetings to revisit the high-school plan for academics and extracurricular activities.
  • Practice PSAT in the fall of sophomore year and preparation for PSAT testing junior year.

Tenth and Eleventh Grade Students and Parents

  • Mock College Admissions Workshop in February.

Eleventh Grade Students and Parents

  • “Preview to College Counseling for Juniors and their Parents” with the College Counselors in the fall of junior year.
  • “College Counseling Night for Junior and their Parents” with the College Counselors in the spring of junior year.
  • College visits begin.

Eleventh Grade Students

  • Weekly group meetings with the College Counselors in the spring to learn about colleges and the application process.
  • Individual meetings with the College Counselor in the spring to plan for testing, college visits, and initial college list. Follow-up letter to parents in early summer.
  • PSAT testing in the fall and SAT and/or ACT testing in the spring. SAT Subject Tests in June.

Twelfth Grade Students and Parents

  • Parents and students answer narrative questionnaires, which assist the counselors in personalizing the school letter of recommendation.
  • Update on College Counseling for parents of seniors at Back-to-School Night.
  • Financial Aid Night in the fall.

Twelfth Grade Students

  • Summer application workshops and Senior Moratorium in October to prepare college applications.
  • Weekly group meetings in the fall with the College Counselors to review final application procedures.
  • Individual meetings with the College Counselor to review final college list and gather information for the school letter of recommendation.
  • College acceptances announced at Morning Meeting. On May 1, students announce their final choice.

All students enjoy frequent, informal meetings with their counselor and are encouraged to attend on-campus meetings with college representatives. Parents receive frequent newsletters. An abundance of printed material is available for students in the College Counseling Office.
