Winter Sports: Soccer, Basketball, Ski/Snowboard
Winter sports take athletes from the pitch to the court to the slope.
Boys soccer is a perennial powerhouse in the area racking up multiple league and section championships, winning 12 league titles, four Sac-Joaquin Section championships and three Sac-Joaquin Section runners-up. The defending Sacramento Metropolitan League champs repeated in the fall 2015 season and earned another berth in the playoffs. Coach Matt Vargo will stay on as the varsity boys’ soccer coach as the sport moves from to the winter season. The girls’ program has been coached by George Champayne for 20 years.
The boys’ basketball team, led by Coach David Ancrum for the past 16 years, is coming off back-to-back SMAL league championships. The Cavaliers rolled through the league last year going undefeated in league for the first time in school history. The boys won the Victory Christian Viking Classic tournament led by Tournament MVP Cole Johnson. They fell to Folsom High School in the Championship of the Folsom/Vista Holiday Classic tournament. Coach Ancrum looks forward to the challenge of a new year with many new faces donning the red and black of Cavalier Basketball.
The girls’ basketball team will have a new head coach but a familiar face as Coach Latonia Pitts takes over the reigns of the varsity program. Coach Pitts was the JV head coach last season, our first JV girls’ basketball team in 12 years. Last year the varsity team had a fantastic season with Coach Vargo, finishing in second place in the SMAL and winning their first ever road playoff game in program history. The girls are excited as they return three starters including all league first team center Yasmin Gupta.
The ski and snowboard team, coached by Jason Kreps, won the Central Division 1 league in the 2015-16 season and with it an historic berth in the California/Nevada Championships at Mt. Shasta.
