Civic Engagement

Overview

Civic Engagement
Our students connect to community, both locally and internationally, through the "Habit of Helping."

In 1989 former head of school Dan White coined the term the "Habit of Helping" as a one-year emphasis for Sacramento Country Day. His motto still lives as an active part of Sacramento Country Day's Mission to help others.

Community Service

High school students must complete 50 hours of community service. Students take leadership on community and international support projects for Run to Feed the Hungry, Dyer Kelly Elementary School, and our sister Rulindo Schools in Rwanda.

Guest Speakers

Recent invitees to campus include Holocaust survivor Dr. Bernard Marks, who spent time in Auschwitz prison camp, and Christine Flowers, from the Climate Reality Project.

Sophomore Project

In their tenth grade year, students work on a yearlong research project, focusing their topics on issues of local significance to Sacramento and working with our library, English, and history staff to develop original and important ideas to present to the community during our Sophomore Symposium.

Internships

Students connect with both the non-profit and for-profit sectors through a robust set of summer internships. One student traveled to Leyte, the Philippines assisting with cleft lip surgeries; another worked for Electro Scan a leak detection company. Other recent partners include the U.C. Davis M.I.N.D Institute, Axiom 88, the Sutter Medical Center, and Cal State University Department of Education.
