Retiring Faculty: Richard Day & Jane Bauman

After decades of inspiring students, shaping programs, and contributing to the heart of our community, we say goodbye this year to two beloved, longtime faculty members whose impact on Sacramento Country Day will be felt for generations.

Richard Day first joined Country Day as a long-term substitute in 1995 before officially returning in 1997 after spending two years in France. Over nearly three decades, he built and guided the French program, teaching every level from beginning French through AP. Reflecting on the school, he shared that what always stood out most was the remarkable quality of both the students and faculty, as well as the school’s unique blend of academic rigor, creativity, and close community. Perhaps the greatest testament to Country Day came in a simple reflection: “If I had children, I would have sent them here.”

Jane Bauman began at Country Day in 2003 as a substitute teacher before stepping into a full-time English teaching role in 2005. Over the next 23 years, she became a beloved teacher, AP English instructor, Director of College Counseling, colleague, and Country Day parent to two alumni, Jeff ’06 and Claire ’09. Reflecting on her years here, she shared how meaningful it has been to watch students grow into colleagues and to remain part of a community built on authentic relationships and a love of learning
