Celebrating Black History Month

Celebrating Black History Month

Last week, we hosted an 8th - 12th grade film screening in honor of Black History Month featuring the film John Burris, followed by a Q&A with legendary civil rights attorney John Burris, known for defending Rodney King, Tupac Shakur, and Oscar Grant. The film is produced by Country Day class of '83 alum Brian Spencer, an acclaimed film documentarian.

This week, students will have the opportunity to engage more deeply with the film through facilitated discussions in their advising groups. These conversations will be supported with guiding questions and facilitator preparation to ensure they are developmentally appropriate and thoughtfully led.

By engaging with stories like John Burris’s, our students are challenged to think critically about history, power, and advocacy. This opportunity examined the past not as something distant, but as a guide for building a more just, compassionate, and thoughtful future.
