Our Middle and High School Librarian, Jo Melinson, recently co-authored an article that was published in the political librarian. This paper investigates how limiting access to subscription online content through legislation encourages pre-restriction by vendors and school librarians as a response to these complaints. The authors also cover strategies on how to protect school libraries against these threats.
Jo was also recently quoted in a fascinating New York Times article about teenagers relationship with news and how teachers and librarians approach information literacy with students. She shares, "We start by teaching 6th graders how to evaluate web resources by paying attention to who is responsible for the information, what their qualifications are, and how the information might be biased. Later we teach skills for lateral reading that can help them determine more quickly about that authority and bias. We teach them about misinformation and give them skills to identify it when they see it, as well as ways to recognize more reliable sources." Scroll all the way to the end of the article for her full response.
Jo came to Country Day in 1994, and since 2007 has been the 6th – 12th grade librarian. Her collaboration with our other campus librarians on the Country Day Reads Blog is new this year and highlights the mission of the library to foster lifelong learning.
