About our Libraries

Overview

The Winters and Matthews Libraries

Sacramento Country Day students are fortunate to have, in the words of the prominent children’s author Mem Fox, “The constant good fortune of hearing great literature beautifully delivered into the ear and from there into the heart and from the heart into the bones.”

There are two libraries on campus for the use of students and faculty. The Winters Library is for students pre-kindergarten to 5th grade, and the Matthews Library serves Middle and High School students.

The Lower School Winters Library

Reading aloud is a hallmark of our students’ time in the library. In a sun-filled room filled with child-sized tables, matching chairs, and comfortable beanbags, the library is a space to silently read, read with friends, and listen to stories. Excellent reading is demonstrated and children are mentored in the habits, values, and strategies of proficient readers.

The Matthews Library

The Matthews Library, which serves the Middle and High Schools, is a bright, lively space filled with materials to support classwork. It also boasts cozy reading, a quiet study space, and a librarian and an assistant librarian that are always eager to help (and sometimes provide chocolate and/or tea). Library displays reflect a variety of topics, including student favorites as well as current topics of interest. The Library Program includes support for classes as well as extracurricular pursuits.
