Beyond Tuition
We are thankful for the many ways our SCDS families and the broader community support our Mission of Excellence. From countless volunteer hours, to gifts of goods and services, to tangible gifts of any size, we are grateful to our generous benefactors. The longevity, stability, and strength of a school like Country Day are dependent upon the generosity of those who represent our present and our past.
Independent education, with its benefits of committed faculty, small class size, and individualized attention, is expensive, and tuition alone does not cover all of the costs. For that reason, we ask our families to support, to the extent of their financial capability, the school’s fundraising efforts. Donors may designate contributions to support annual, capital, endowment or special needs.
Annual Fund
Common to almost every independent school, college, and university in the country, the Annual Fund is a yearly request of parents, trustees, employees, alumni, and friends of the school for their financial support. These gifts bridge the gap between what the school charges for tuition and the actual cost of a Country Day education.
Capital Campaign
This is a fundraising effort, usually in the millions of dollars, that supports costly improvements to the school’s physical plant. As SCDS continues to renovate and replace 40-year-old temporary buildings on the Latham Campus with handsome, state-of-the-art classrooms, contributions to the Capital Fund are essential.
Endowment
A strong endowment means choices for the future. The principal of an endowment gift is invested and the income generated becomes a critical source of revenue for the long-range fiscal strength of the school. The SCDS Endowment is comprised of several named endowment funds, some of which were established to honor family members and friends.
Restricted
Donors may direct gifts to a particular need, program or project.
Matching Gifts
Many companies offer matching gift programs that will double a donation’s value. If you have questions about your company’s matching gift program, please contact your personnel office.
Memorial, Honorary, and Commemorative Gifts
Donations made to any of the above funds may be designated as a tribute to a person during his or her lifetime or to commemorate a significant event. The school will inform the honoree or the family of the gift.
Planned Giving
These are gifts made now for the future through estate planning via bequests, interest in a life insurance or retirement policy, charitable remainder trusts, or charitable lead trusts.
Gifts-in-Kind
SCDS welcomes donations of goods and or services that would otherwise have to be paid for by the school. Gift value is determined by an appraisal or a record of purchase.
