Lower School

Overview

Lower School

The Lower School program is designed to support the growth of the whole child in the complex process of development. An enriched curriculum encourages in each child a high degree of competence and interest in foundational academic skills as well as the performing and visual arts, physical education, and world culture and language. Small classes and individual attention nurture a strong sense of academic, creative, and social skill and competence. The goal of our program is to develop well-rounded, self-confident students with excellent academic and life skills who are able to meet the challenges of Country Day’s Middle School, High School, and beyond. While we develop a lifelong joy and love of learning, we also seek to develop the habit of helping and the moral responsibility for seeing beyond our own lives to recognize the needs of others, both locally and throughout the world.

A Day in the Life

Lower School students gallop from their cars every morning, eager to greet their friends and play. When the whistle blows to line up they gather on Edwards Plaza to start their day. Some classes go straight to their homerooms, while others may be headed off to one of their specialists’ classes in PE, Music, Art, World Language, or Library.

Integrated Curriculum

We believe that learning is enhanced and better brains are built when students make connections between and among the various subjects taught in the classroom and beyond. By connecting math to science to social studies to literature to art to music to physical education to world culture, we give our students the broadest and deepest understanding of their world, their community, and their place in it.

Beyond the Classroom

The Lower School curriculum includes many activities that are taught by both our classroom teachers and our specialists. Not merely enrichment, but integral to our education of the whole child, these activities include assemblies and musical performances, as well as work in the art studio, music room, gym and fields, and library.
