The Independent School Advantage
Country Day educates the whole child – intellectual curiosity, social development, moral responsibility.
“Front-Row” Seats
At SCDS, individual students matter; one-on-one teacher-student contacts are the norm. A hallmark of the school is the close, mentoring relationships that develop between students and their teachers. Our children will face a mass, faceless society soon enough – indeed, in some respects, they already have – so why not prepare them for life by building self-confidence and developing fully the talent of each child?
Choices, Choices, and More Choices
Students have full access to every program we offer. As students experience drama, sports, our award-winning newspaper, Mock Trial, Student Council, or instrumental music, they discover unknown talents and interests and learn to try new things. Students can be selective, make choices, or do it all at Sacramento Country Day.
Independent Thinking
We encourage children in the open pursuit of knowledge. From literature-based writing and a focus on critical thinking and problem-solving in math in the Lower School to Advanced Placement and honors instruction in the High School, SCDS challenges its students to grow intellectually. Indeed, we pride ourselves on helping each child find his or her own “voice.”
Dedicated, Talented Faculty
SCDS attracts outstanding teachers who recognize the value of bright, enthusiastic children, small class sizes, the supportive community of colleagues and parents, and the opportunity to tailor a curriculum and create a classroom ambiance that enhances their students’ individual educational needs.
Sound Values
Integrity, respect for others, responsibility to the community, and fairness are values that matter at SCDS. Through school year themes, the “Habit of Helping,” human development education, standards of dress and deportment, respectful interpersonal relationships with peers and adults both on and off campus, we hold our students to high moral and ethical standards. We believe that knowledge without values is a potential danger to us all.
Safety and Structure
A low student-faculty ratio and constant attention to the school environment enables SCDS to maintain a campus where students are safe and supported. Structure for SCDS means not only a daily schedule and clear expectations, but also a readiness to apply disciplinary action when necessary. Students need to feel safe, and they need to know limits, since testing boundaries is part of growing up.
